Additional CHPC Presentations on the Use of Modules at CHPCOn Thursday Feb 19, 2015 CHPC will start to provide the option for users to change to the use of modules (from the current sourcing of set up scripts for different applications) in order to manage their session environment.
Modules is an environment management tool which makes modifying the user's shell environment simple and dynamic. The advantage of modules primarily comes from the capability to load and unload the environment needed for a given software package, allowing users to quickly and easily start using programs or switch development environments.
For the foreseeable future, CHPC users will have the choice to adopt the module environment or to remain with the script sourcing method that has been used in the past. All new users accounts will be started with the module option.
More details about this change will follow next week when we go live with this option.
At this time we wanted to announce that we will be offering the following sessions about modules:
- Thursday Feb 19 at 1pm in INSCC auditorium – Getting Started with Modules
- Thursday Feb 26 at 1pm in INSCC auditorium – Getting Started with Modules (repeat)
- Thursday Mar 5 at 1:30pm in INSCC 345 – Advanced Module Use
In the Getting Started sessions we will focus on how to use modules and what steps users need to take in order to start using the module environment. Users can come with laptops if preferred and we will assist with the transition.
In the Advanced Module Use session we will focus on how we have our modules organized and how users can create modules for any applications they may have installed in their own space.

R update on Linux machinesWe have built a new distribution of R that takes advantage of multithreading when processing numerical arrays and made it the
default R to use on CHPC's Linux systems including the clusters. The multithreaded build will run in parallel on a single compute node and
standard R linear algebra benchmark achieves 5-10 speedup on kingspeak as compared to the single threaded build. To use multiple nodes, a
distributed parallel package such as Rmpi or snow is still necessary.
We have installed external packages that have been built for the older versions but if there is an additional package you need, please, let
us know.
For details how to use R at CHPC, see the documentation at
https://www.chpc.utah.edu/documentation/software/r-language.php

IMPORTANT for all users with linux desktopsIf you have a CHPC administered linux desktop we have applied the security patch for the recently announced GHOST glibc vulnerability. You MUST reboot your desktop as soon as possible in order to have the patch take effect.
If you are running a linux desktop that is not CHPC administered, please make sure that your system has been updated and rebooted. If you have any questions, please contact issues@chpc.utah.edu
